I don't really have anything of substance to say, but I guess I'll still put it behind a cut since spoilers (including some big ones).

Spoilers:

- Hot young Guinan! Wow, her arms.

That actress really did an excellent job. I realize "vibes" is super overused but yeah, she had the Whoopi vibes, but it wasn't an impersonation... it was just good.

(I have mixed feelings about including Whoopi... it feels like rewarding someone who's said some really heinous things. At the same time... idk.)

Back to Guinan-the-character. Like everyone else, I wondered, "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE EPISODES WITH MARK TWAIN??????" The Watcher is Mark Twain.

(I think the movie Generations also ignores the Mark Twain episodes? Everyone's ignoring the Mark Twain episodes!)

- Enjoyed watching Trek roast ICE, as they should. I saw a comment somewhere saying this episode was "too woke" for them. It always boggles my mind when conservatives watch Star Trek. Like. Guys. This was never for you. It is actively against you.

- The sapphic vibes between Agnes and the Borg Queen are off the charts.

On the one hand, I totally get how annoying it is for fans of dark f/f to have pairings like this one, that are set up by canon to be dark and fucked up, to inspire nothing but fluffy curtainfic.

On the other hand, since the Borg Queen tentacle!domming Agnes or Agnes topping from the bottom D/s-ily is what we all would expect, I admit I really want to see Agnes and the Borg Queen going to the grocery store instead. Not in a fluffy way. It's the same dynamic. Agnes is pushing the Borg Queen in a shopping cart. She's really mad about it. The Borg Queen is giving a lofty villain speech like always while they go down the snacks aisle, and after going on about the futility of hope and how they're all going to bow before her, she adds, "Could you be a dear and buy me some Chex mix?"

Anyway.

- I mean, I guess now that Agnes DID THAT THING SHE DID this can't happen now, but you can set a fic whenever.

That really shocked me. But I guess it's one more brick set down in the path to Borg Queendom they're steadily building for Agnes.

Man, seriously, the f/f energy between them during that flashback when she killed her was off the fucking charts.

- Also, re: the Borg Queen... I think her Intense Flamboyant Villain Energy/entire characterization kind of makes no sense, given what the Borg are, and it in some ways makes them less scary. The original idea from "Q Who", that it's this fucking cube, and they don't talk to you, they just move past you and assimilate and are completely uncaring, was much scarier than what they evolved into over time. I know I've seen critiques like this regarding the Borg Queen in First Contact, that it just doesn't make sense. That said, while it doesn't make sense, it is 1) awesome; 2) much more dramatically interesting in terms of ongoing storytelling.

- I was sad at the idea of Q barely being in this season except as a catalyst for the story, and I still would like an episode that has as much of him as "Tapestry" or "Deja Q" did, but still, his appearance in Ep 5 was nice!

Since I love "Deja Q" and since he's my fave and since I came of age at a time when the thing to do was write "Deja Q" AUs where Q is a powerless woobie, I was really excited at the end of 2x04 when his powers seemed to be gone (also... was that woman he seemed to be focusing on... was that Amanda!Q? Played by a different actress? Probably not). [ETA: Oh, apparently, that was Renee Picard! According to [personal profile] selenak's recap here (I have loved her recaps for years, and one of the biggest pleasures of returning to Dreamwidth is reading them again).]

But having him seemingly be a villain and seeing him in these scenes with Brent Spiner was wonderful in a different way. It was great seeing them act opposite each other again, with Spiner playing such a different character. And what Q did to Kore... so cruel. I mean. Man.

I keep wondering if Q is doing something bad for good reasons? He's working against Picard, seemingly, but seems to want Picard to work against him? And the stuff he was saying in 2x04... maybe he's working for someone else, but doesn't want to be, and wants Picard to win?

Or maybe I am determined to woobify my fave, lol. Real shades of "LOKI WAS MIND-CONTROLLED BY THANOS OR TORTURED BY HIM A LOT OKAY" here, lolol.

I guess Agnes based Dahj and Soji off historical records of Great Grandpappy Soong's daughter?

- I wish I had more to say about Raffi and Seven? I just love them? I'm highly enjoying their relationship.

- Agnes' dress at the gala is amazing. Poor Renee Picard, she's having problems. Lol Q as her therapist.
