OH
MY
GODDDDDDDDDDDDDD
AUUUUGH IT'S
SO
HOT
This is basically only the second time something I shipped went canon. (The other was Spike/Buffy, and by "shipped it" I mean, I didn't read fic, I didn't interact with that section of fandom, I only started being into it in S5 (or 4? whenever Spike started crushing on her), and I really loved the lead-up and really did not enjoy the execution.) IT'S A GREAT FEELING, HOLY SHIT.
At the same time, it's a really conflicted feeling, because a pal of mine really, really dislikes the ship and was really afraid it would happen, and it's a weird feeling when something happens that totally makes your night but you know it totally ruined a buddy's night, it is very conflicting and weird. Strong feelings! On all sides! About little fictional ghost people! We're over-invested in this silly CBS sitcom! Normal intense fannish behavior is happening!
I actually don't think this ship is going to last more than maybe 3-4 episodes, or at the very least, I don't think the ship is going to survive the season, so it's kind of the best of both worlds, maybe, question mark? Because if you do ship it, you get to see it play out for a bit, and if you don't, it won't be here super long. I think the dynamic between Hetty and Trevor is just too volatile to last. Which is, for me, what makes it really hot. But yeah.
I kinda hope this brings in more fans, because this is the kind of more intense relationship that the show did not have before, in any gender configuration? The other ships are a lot more gentle. I feel like the xmas special may have brought in more fans anyway, I feel like there's been a tiny uptick in activity? Though that may just be existing fans freaking out after a three week hiatus. Either way, it's great!
Although that Nisaac kiss. Woooof, that was so sweet yet also so hot. Isaac was so decisive! Good for you, Isaac! Gifs of that kiss, not embedded because I didn't make these and idk the etiquette around that.
Seriously, I just wanted to see Trevor kiss somebody and I got my wish, and then on top of it, it's Hetty who is one of the many people I ship him with. Tbf, I ship Trevor with everybody. Hetty, Thor, Pete, Sam, Jay, Sass, Bela, Bela's buddy Eric, Crash, the Farnsbys... basically anyone and everyone.
It's just crazy that a ship I never even thought of until reading this fic, which was written by a pal on a whim as a pure crackship, suddenly became something, due to said fic, that I shipped hard (along with Trevor/Thor, lol... which also started as a friend shipping it as a crackship... by osmosis.... without having ever seen the show...), and now it's canon? ?? ?!?!?!
There's an interview with Asher Grodman (warning: article and headline contain spoilers for an upcoming episode) where he talks about this development and refers to Trevor and Hetty as "two mismatched clowns". Yes. Good. Love it. These guys understand the assignment.
(I feel like I should be talking more about Nisaac, as someone who is a big supporter of The Gay Agenda and tries to write queer characters into everything, and I love Isaac and Nigel, but Trevor's my fave and my blorbo, sorry, world!)
ANYWAY, BACK TO MY BLORBO: It is a bummer Trevor and Bela didn't get to hook up, I was rooting for them, and I think it would've been fun to see the actor playing Eric have to play Trevor, but at the same time, if they make possession too easy, it wouldn't fit the vibe of the show. A lot of the comedy comes from all of this being difficult... that it's rare to see ghosts, that the ghosts' powers are weak and ineffective, that the ghosts are very limited in what they can do and where they can go. So making it super easy for them to possess someone would give them a huge power-up, so to speak, and kind of break the show's rules or vibe, I guess.
Speaking of possession: SAM AS THOR. OH MY GOD. So cute. So wonderful. I was a big fan of iZombie, so seeing Rose McIver get to do what she did in that show and embody an entirely different personality and physicality was a lot of fun. Sam's little face doing that Thor frown! In her little Christmas sweater! Incredibly adorable. I loved seeing her hook her thumbs in her belt loops like Thor does, trying to take up space. Eating half a stick of fucking butter. (Which someone on Tumblr said Vikings actually did????) Also, Jay, how did you not know that was Thor, what the hell, dude.
My one complaint, and because I'm wordy this will probably sound more angry than it is, I love this show, I'm not like "fuck you and fuck your whole family" about it, and it's a complaint I shared with my Tretty-disliking buddy, is that there were a few places where this was called a "Christmas and Hannukah episode" and that... was just not true, guys. (Though valiant work by Grodman trying to get #Hauntukah trending.) I can be kind of a Grinch about Christmas, as a vaguely goth, atheist Jew (Halloween is my xmas, lol)... there are some things I like about it, but the way it gets pushed so so so hard is just an annual reminder that the US is a majority-Christian (is "Christian-supremacist" too spicy of a term to use when mildly nitpicking a sitcom I'm a huge fan of?) nation and always has been and always will be. Like, geez, Sam, at least put a menorah out or something! And like... Thor's not wrong that it's cultural appropriation, lol? It's just that that ship has sailed. And there is this unsettling, if you're not Christian, element to the show where, like... so the characters can get "sucked off" up into a white light that clearly indicates Heaven, or they can "go down" into a red light that clearly indicates Hell. So, we've got Jay, Sass, Thor and Trevor here, the creative team has chosen to include four (presumably, in Jay's case) non-Christian characters, and yet the show essentially says to those characters, "Your Bible is a lie! Freak out!" Like, regardless of what parallels to those concepts do or don't exist in non-Christian religions, it's culturally-Christian framing and visual language.
So that's not great. But other than that, I love it!
Man, it's gonna be hard having another hiatus until January when the show comes back. I hope lots of porn is written in the interim. I already tried writing some and it really sucks, so hopefully others will step in and succeed where I have failed.
Also, I realize I did not post my reactions to S02E08 - "The Liquor License", which I really enjoyed. POOR PETE. OMG. Also, Trevor first being a douche to Isaac and then being very sweet to him. ;_; Also, wow, Benjy Franklin, what a dick. Also, THEY CUT THE THOR/FLOWER/TREVOR HUG WTF HOW COULD YOU.

They are such needy, arrogant, beautiful clowns ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a perfect description. I love it.
You thinkin' of writing fic? :D? :D?
I am 100% with you on the unsettling *Christian-ness* of everything. It doesn't have to be like that! What gives, ugh.
I mean, The Good Place did it, too. I think there's a sense among creatives, maybe even Jewish creatives (one of the Joes aka the CBS Ghosts showrunners is Jewish), is that if you don't actually call it Heaven and Hell that you're being inclusive. I mean, I am the most ignorant Jew in the world, I know frickin' nothing about my own religion, but like... I am pretty sure the idea of "white fluffy clouds" vs "red devils and flames" is culturally Christian? Maybe I'm wrong? Someone more knowledgable please step in? Maybe I should start googling but I'm lazy?

Date: 2022-12-20 01:33 am (UTC)Yes, I agree. And I can't believe I never realized she was the actress from iZombie. Her look is so different!
I'm not in the Ghosts fandom so I didn't realize there was any push for Hetty/Trevor but I can imagine the excitement for those who got Kripked 😃 I was delighted with Isaac and Nigel who are so awkwardly cute together.
Excellent point about the whole foundation of Ghosts and its theological references, particularly given the variety of characters and beliefs.

Date: 2023-01-01 10:55 pm (UTC)I definitely agree about the Christmas supremacy in this episode. Like, it was marketed as a Christmas and Hanukkah episode but where is the Hanukkah? Watching it for the first time, I thought it might just be me being annoyed because I don’t care about Christmas, but it’s good to know that it wasn’t just me who picked up on that.
I’m so glad the hiatus is ending this week, like call me obsessed or whatever but I need my Ghosts content.

Date: 2023-01-02 02:56 am (UTC)And it's okay that you NOTP them, to each their own!
Like, it was marketed as a Christmas and Hanukkah episode but where is the Hanukkah?
Lolsob, yep. I guess in retrospect, it was like... just Asher Grodman trying to will Hannukah retroactively into the ep through the power of vibes.
but it’s good to know that it wasn’t just me who picked up on that.
It was definitely not just you! I have a pal who was even more disappointed by it. As a Jew, I'm not like, "CANCEL THIS SHOW, PROBLEMATIC FOREVER" but it was a little annoying.
I’m so glad the hiatus is ending this week, like call me obsessed or whatever but I need my Ghosts content.
I'm so so so stoked! Who are your favorite characters? Favorite episodes? Etc.?

Date: 2023-01-02 02:59 am (UTC)I just watched The Christmas Prince for Rose and by "watched" I mean despite my affection for/addiction to really bad movies ala Birdemic and The Room I simply could not make it more than 30 minutes into that thing, and she looked so different in that as well!
I'm not in the Ghosts fandom so I didn't realize there was any push for Hetty/Trevor
My sense is the younger fans are not as into it but there definitely is a (aside from me, lol) less vocal cadre that are; like I see positive comments about it on Instagram and the subreddit.
I was delighted with Isaac and Nigel who are so awkwardly cute together.
Yessss, I loved it so much!
Excellent point about the whole foundation of Ghosts and its theological references, particularly given the variety of characters and beliefs.
Thanks!

Date: 2023-01-02 03:31 am (UTC)He was out here sticking #Hauntukkah on every single tweet about the episode like it was going to change the storyline I love him
It was definitely not just you! I have a pal who was even more disappointed by it. As a Jew, I'm not like, "CANCEL THIS SHOW, PROBLEMATIC FOREVER" but it was a little annoying.
Definitely and it became more noticeable because there was so much emphasis on Christmas
I'm so so so stoked! Who are your favorite characters? Favorite episodes? Etc.?
Omg this is so exciting I literally know no one else who is actively in this fandom!
Okay Trevor is my blorbo I utterly adore him with all my heart but I also really like Pete and Alberta. I have like a million favorite episodes so we’ll just say every one from 4 to 16 in the first season? Maybe it would be easier for me to just list the episodes that aren’t my favorite lol. Also I should probably mention that I’m a huge Pete/Trevor shipper. How about you? You mentioned that Trevor’s your blorbo too, but which other characters do you like? And how about episodes?

Date: 2023-01-02 09:56 pm (UTC)Lol, ikr? I highly recommend following his and the rest of the cast's Instagrams, I'm not super into IG but they are all so adorable.
Omg this is so exciting I literally know no one else who is actively in this fandom!
Omg! How did you end up joining Dreamwidth? Where is your usual fannish hangout? If you don't mind saying, you don't have to.
I co-mod an 18+ no-ship-shaming-or-kink-shaming-allowed CBS Ghosts Discord server here! And there are two other all-ages CBS Ghosts Discord servers: here (this one's associated with the main fansite at cbsghosts.com) and here! There are minors in both of those servers, just fyi. One of my co-mods is a co-mod for one (or both????) of those. It's a teeny tiny fandom, lol.
But no pressure, if you're not into Discord, that's okay!
A buddy told me the Twitter fandom is more active, but idk, I have trouble finding a lot of activity there? Maybe it's just not all in the tag?
Okay Trevor is my blorbo I utterly adore him with all my heart but I also really like Pete and Alberta.
Yayyyyy! Yep, Trevor is clearly also my blorbo BUT PETE AND ALBERTA ARE SO AMAZING AND I LOVE THEM. I don't think there's a ghost I don't love?
Maybe it would be easier for me to just list the episodes that aren’t my favorite lol.
Haha, same, probably.
Also I should probably mention that I’m a huge Pete/Trevor shipper.
TREEEETE! What a great ship. They are so cute together. They're opposites! But they care about each other!
but which other characters do you like?
This is hard, I love all of them. Thor is amazing and I ship him really hard with Trevor. He's got such a dark past and yet he's so sensitive and cuddly in some ways. Danielle Pinnock is so amazing as Alberta, her line readings just SEND me. Brandon Scott Jones is such a gifted comedian, some of the things he does as Isaac also just kill me. Utkarsh! Utkarsh playing Jay as Hetty, Jesus Christ, that was amazing. I love how Sass trolls everyone and his thirst for drama. Flower's backstory is so dark and I keep hoping one day she'll realize that the cult was bad and, like fully take it in but also heal. Rebecca Wisocky is incredible. Rose's job as Sam is so difficult and she makes it look effortless. Pete is so incredibly sweet and such a dear and Richie is so great as him. Also, "Welcome to another day in hell, bitch" will make me laugh for the rest of my life. At first Nancy got on my nerves but now she's completely grown on me. I love everyone! Even the Farnsbys! Even Elias! Well, maybe "love" is a strong word for Elias, he's a total piece of shit. But that actor did a great job as him. "Ravenous thrust fest," lolololol.
Wow, I wrote a lot.
And how about episodes?
"Trevor's Pants" is I think the episode that made this go from "cute thing i put on in the background while playing phone games" to "intense fandom obsession". The A and B plots are both just so good. "D&D" is a favorite because of how elegantly structured it is, I love that the B plot solves the A plot, or vice versa. Same thing for "Possession", plus it has Utkarsh doing these insane hoots and giggles that Hetty absolutely has never done and yet somehow it feels completely right and is also hysterical.
For S2, so far, "Jay's Friends" (no one else seems to like this one? I really liked that it did something topical, scam MLMs that are also cults are kind of huge right now). I loooove the Trevor plot in "The Baby Bjorn" so so much but the Thor plot bums me out a bit? The C plot with the Farnsbys is amazing, though. Part 2 of "The Christmas Spirit" also, because, obviously, my ship, but mainly because Sam!Thor is so adorable, I wanted to marry her/him/them.
What were your fandoms before this, if you don't mind sharing?

Date: 2023-01-02 11:15 pm (UTC)I quit Instagram about half a year ago but I still go back sometimes just to see the cast’s posts, they’re so sweet <3
How did you end up joining Dreamwidth?
I lurk on here sometimes for fandom stuff and some of the gift exchanges that I participate have info pages on here, but I ended up making an account because 1) I want some place to just rant about things that I can’t to people I know irl 2) I wanted to participate in the snowflake challenge this year and 3) I kind of want to explore fandom beyond lurking a little
Where is your usual fannish hangout?
I’m not really on social media anymore, but I do lurk tumblr a lot and twitter a little for fandom content. I tend to mostly hangout just on AO3 though.
I’ve heard about the Ghosts discords in passing and I’ve thought about joining, but I recently took a step back from social media for privacy reasons and I’ve been trying to work through exactly how much information/how active I want to be on there. I will definitely consider the idea though, it sounds very fun!
I don't think there's a ghost I don't love?
Honestly, same. Every single ensemble character in this show is so great and I absolutely love the way the cast plays them. Even the characters that only appear for one episode are hilarious (even though some of them are terrible people)!
multicoloryang is probably a good Twitter follow for you
Okay this is such a coincidence but I actually have been lurking on multicoloryang’s Twitter for a while because I love their Trete content and episode analyses. It’s so cool that you guys are fandom friends!
"Trevor's Pants" is I think the episode that made this go from "cute thing i put on in the background while playing phone games" to "intense fandom obsession".
“Trevor’s Pants” is great! This is the one that really made me love Trevor. The A and B plot are both so entertaining!
"D&D" is a favorite because of how elegantly structured it is, I love that the B plot solves the A plot, or vice versa.
“D&D” is so great! I think this was the episode that made me join the fandom.
Same thing for "Possession", plus it has Utkarsh doing these insane hoots and giggles that Hetty absolutely has never done and yet somehow it feels completely right and is also hysterical.
“Possession” is so hilarious! It really hit me halfway through the episode that no this is not an actual man being possessed this is an actor pretending to be a character who is possessed and honestly, I think that’s a mark of how great the acting was.
"Jay's Friends" (no one else seems to like this one?)
I love this episode! It’s definitely in my top three for the season and it was my favorite in the season when it came out.
I loooove the Trevor plot in "The Baby Bjorn" so so much but the Thor plot bums me out a bit? The C plot with the Farnsbys is amazing, though.
This one is probably my favorite episode this season. I agree on all fronts - the plots with Trevor and Farnsbys are great but the one with Thor was kind of sad
Part 2 of "The Christmas Spirit" also, because, obviously, my ship, but mainly because Sam!Thor is so adorable
Sam!Thor was so sweet and I loved the conversation Pete had with him/her/them.
What were your fandoms before this, if you don't mind sharing?
I have a LOT of them. Ghosts is my main fandom now, but I still switch in and out of some of these fandoms in the background from time to time.
Harry Potter, Star Wars Original Trilogy, MCU, Ever After High, Madam Secretary, The Office (US), The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, The Closer, Hamilton, How I Met Your Mother, Miraculous Ladybug, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Warrior Cats.

I envy you for how much you love yourself and do the right thing for your sanity.
but I recently took a step back from social media for privacy reasons and I’ve been trying to work through exactly how much information/how active I want to be on there. I will definitely consider the idea though, it sounds very fun!
Totally makes sense, totally valid!
Okay this is such a coincidence but I actually have been lurking on multicoloryang’s Twitter for a while because I love their Trete content and episode analyses. It’s so cool that you guys are fandom friends!
Omg yay! Their AO3 fan-episodes are lot of fun as well.
It really hit me halfway through the episode that no this is not an actual man being possessed this is an actor pretending to be a character who is possessed and honestly, I think that’s a mark of how great the acting was.
Same! I was recently looking for clips of Hetty for a vid and I forgot how little Rebecca Wisocky is actually in that one, since "Hetty" is in it a lot, just... as Utkarsh.
That is a LOT of fandoms! I finally started watching The Office (US) for the first time this year, due to my gf. HIMYM is a lot of fun. Love ATLA so much, intrigued by the new stuff they're gonna make. And a good friend of mine is reading Warrior Cats for the first time to their kid right now! What was Hamilton fandom like?
no subject
Date: 2023-01-22 04:33 pm (UTC)Honestly, I still lurk everywhere and I’m constantly on my phone, but thank you for believing in me!
I finally started watching The Office (US) for the first time this year, due to my gf.
That’s so cool! How have you liked it so far?
What was Hamilton fandom like?
Honestly, all things considered, it wasn’t too bad. I do remember that there were a lot of memes. Everyone I interacted with seemed nice. I do have a few IRL friends who were in the fandom at the time with me though and one of them provided an ~interesting~ experience where they shamed me for being in the fandom even though they were also in the fandom?? Either way, it was better than I’d heard for sure.
