Disenchanted (2022)

Spoilers for Disenchanted (2022):

So another DISRUPTIVE & PROVOCATIVE OPINION for today, but I have to admit that I did not like Enchanted (2007). I was so stoked to see it! It's such a killer premise! But I remember being really disappointed by the execution. All I remember of it, over a decade later is: 1) not liking the songs; 2) thinking the animation was very pretty, especially in the context of Disney essentially abandoning traditional animation; 3) loving James Marsden, who is also very pretty.

But based on the trailer, I thought the sequel looked fun, and wondered if it could improve on the original, since that happens sometime.

It... did not. But I feel like it could be a fun night in for parents and kids, probably.

The good:

- Amy Adams as a wicked stepmother; she's great, obviously
- Maya Rudolph
- the costumes are gorge
- at least I got to see James Marsden's face for like three minutes of combined screentime
- very good performance from the teenaged daughter
- the movie's really pretty to look at

The bad:

- I am not sure I have enjoyed any songs Alan Menken's written since Howard Ashman passed away. These songs are... not good.

- Why is Amy Adams turning into a wicked stepmother? Why does it have to do with that clock? The rules here are very confusing? Why wasn't it like, "If you take control of another's wishing wand, you will pay the price"? Boom, you're done. One line of dialogue.

- I guess I get the idea behind what they were doing with that Patrick Dempsey subplot but it was really pointless and embarrassing.

- This thing is long. Like all movies recently.

- The quality of the fake-2D animation is... atrocious. Like. Really bad. This is Disney. THIS IS DISNEY. They outsourced it to another studio, apparently have been for a while and I just... this is Disney. It's... it's Disney.

It's so sad to me how... like, clearly, losing Howard Ashman really fucked them. It would be a while before they discovered the Avenue Q guys for Frozen who aren't as good. They luck out, extremely, with Elton John & Tim Rice turning in an excellent soundtrack for The Lion King because everything they've done after that together has been terrible (well, okay, I actually like the music from Aida but that show should probably be forgotten by everyone). After that, they're floundering, they don't know what to do. Most of the traditionally animated movies they release are badly written or at the very least have big writing problems and don't do well, or do well but don't make Lion King money, so for some reason they decide the problem is... traditional animation? Instead of... the writing? It's bizarre!

I mean, 3D has come a long way and it's really gorgeous now, and there's been plenty of movies I've loved in that style, but... can we... can we maybe...? ?? ???

ANYWAY! This movie was bad. But if you like looking at pretty costumes and it's gross out and you just wanna relax with your kid, it will probably serve that purpose.

It's true. A big hefty chunk of their reputation is really his reputation.
