Spirited (2022)

The trailer made me think this would be terrible but in fact, it was great! It did a lot of things I didn't expect, it was funny, I enjoyed the songs, and Reynolds and Ferrell were great together and should kiss.

Spoilers ahead: So this is a modern, musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol where we see the Monsters, Inc.-esque behind-the-scenes world where the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come work all year in order to turn some Scrooge-y person into a better human being. Will Ferrell is Present, the main character, and the Scrooge-y candidate this year is Ryan Reynolds.

I wish the word "slash" hadn't completely fallen out of fashion. On the one hand, it's good, because it means we don't need a code word to say we ship m/m or f/f. But... So all the canon romance in this is het. And to call this movie homoerotic would be a lie. To even say it has "mlm vibes" is not right. To call it slashy? That's completely the vibe. It is 1990s slashy. The guys have love/lust interests with women (with both relationships being interracial, which is nice), but the relationship that gets the focus is between the two guys. If you are not into that, you are not into that, but if you are into that, you may like this.

Usually in ACC remakes, the Scrooge or Scrooge-esque figure complains the whole time but basically is put through his or her paces and changes completely by the end. But what's neat about this is that Reynolds is trying to change Ferrell as much as Ferrell is trying to change Reynolds. Ferrell, the ghost, is the main character, not Reynolds. It's his story and they are vying for power and control throughout the movie, along with growing closer.

Octavia Spencer plays a woman conflicted about working for Reynolds (he's basically an amoral fixer/PR guy), and Ferrell has a crush on her. Their story thread is very sweet and easy to root for even though they are devoid of chemistry.

Also, they are clearly all not singers, but the auto-tune didn't bother me and Ferrell and Reynolds sounded surprisingly nice, and Spencer's regular-non-singing-person voice was charming to me.

The songs were really good! Especially in comparison to Disenchanted's, which I watched right before this!

In conclusion, please write fanfic where Present and Clint (Reynolds) become boyfriends, please and thank you.

Also, content warning [SPOILER ALERT]: maybe avoid this if you want to avoid anything that deals with cancer or suicide.
