1. me: huh, i'll usually avoid anything Mark Millar writes like the plague, but Huck (2015) seems interesting.

a few pages in: wow, was Millar visited by three Christmas ghosts? This is so sweet. Just a secretly-superpowered sweet big lug cinnamon roll helping out his neighbors:

then: BOKO HARAM?!?!?!

2. Not to out myself and if you read this then iykyk, but I've been avoiding the real world news horrors by reading vintage wank on Fanlore. Guys, it's beautiful.

First: Barbara P. Gordon. She had beef with a lot of people! A lot of people had beef with her! Plus, people were mad she wrote kinky Kirk/Spock noncon slavefic fisting! Did you have beef with Barbara? If so, please tell me.

Second: 1978 Atlanta Schuster Star Trek_Convention: A Massive Fandom Rift

Emphasis mine:

... after that newscast on Saturday night, I was verbally assaulted by a mannerless fanatic in the hotel's restaurant, and she continued to harass me all day Sunday.

It should have ended at that point, however, in an editorial of another zine, I have been obliquely accused of taking this childish person to task - not because of the way she acted - but because she is strongly identified with the K/S gay experiment now being foisted on Fandom.

Another issue at the con, according to a different person:

... it was a shock when I read the following notice on the official convention program: "To prevent overcrowding, William Shatner will Autograph only copies of his record album, 'William Shatner Live'."

This upset fans because even the most obsessed Star Trek fans probably did not want to buy William Shatner Live. (I'll say it, though: that mid-2000s album produced by Ben Folds has my favorite version of "Common People". The Henry Rollins duet is also fun.) Also, everyone was already at the con when this was announced, it sounds like? So yeah, it really seemed like just a way to keep the autograph line as short as possible.

Anyway, a local news reporter asked a fan about the autograph situation and apparently the edited version came across like "a direct attack on Mr. Shatner — but it was not..."

Then [Carol F] entered the scene and proceeded to attack Rebecca verbally as well. The only way to describe the attack is to say it was an outpouring of hatred, hostility, and verbal acid. Among other things, Carol accused Rebecca of "washing dirty linen in public". ... to the extent that I finally spoke up and said: 'Oh, Carol, shut up!' Of course, that only made things worse.

Anyway, maybe my friends had a point when they recently said, "[Wembley], you love misery." I don't! I really don't! ...do I?

Third:

Sometimes, an actor writes a novel about the character he played on the sci-fi show he was on and the fans really like it! (See: A Stitch In Time)

And sometimes, they really, really don't: Avon: A Terrible Aspect

Stunning stuff.

comments

Does anyone know if anyone's created a third-party tool to download a work from AO3 with comments included? I'd love to be able to, like, d/l my own works but with the comments in a readable format,

I saw this on Reddit, but I don't know how to run it (I am not tech-savvy at all, like if you tell me what to paste into the command line I can do it but you need to hold my hand).

I tried to see if this tool could do it, but I can't get it to open (even after telling my Mac's security to let me go ahead and open it, it just bounces in the dock and disappears).

Calibre's batch-download stuff downloads files the way AO3 permits: just the work, no comments.

comments

So I've been pretty open about these two pseuds being connected for a while now, but <strike>because I'm always thirsty for comments</strike> I might as well let you guys know that, off and on, I've been writing Orignal Works pornography as kuntar. Most of these involve:

an arrogant, wealthy, evil and very slutty fop of a sorcerer who gets Whumped Intensely by Even Worse Dudes who make Archive Warnings Apply to him, heavily

a kind, brawny paladin who begrudgingly saves his life a lot even though they're enemies and the sorcerer kind of ruined his life

they smooch a lot

The most recent story (which I just finished finally editing, woooo!):

Sweet Honey, Loathsome | 20k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | Vaunted, a kind paladin, opens his door to find that his longtime enemy, the evil wizard Wrathbyrne, has been stripped of his powers and placed under a curse: Wrathbyrne has to get fucked once a day or he dies.

Previous stories, all of which are standalones that each exist in their own little universes, slightly "canon"-divergent from one another:

Lord Wrathbyrne's Highly Unpleasant Year | 72k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | An evil wizard gets non-conned by a bunch of other evil dudes and then rescued by Fake He-Man.

Roadside Attractions | 5k, Complete | M/M, Explicit | A cartoonishly evil wizard and his heroic, good guy foe are handcuffed together in a sitcom predicament. Then they get dosed with sex pollen.

Reformation | 13k, WIP | M/M, Explicit | The Good Council of Good has a soft-spoken death cleric attempt to rehabilitate the evil wizard and turn him into a good man. Obviously, this is just an excuse for whump and Archive Warnings To Apply to the evil wizard, who hopes local hero, Vaunted the nice paladin, will save him. Even though the nice paladin is the one who arrested him in the first place. Oops.

Anyway, if any of this sounds up your alley, I hope you check 'em out, I love my little guys. <3

comments

I have not posted in a fuckin' year! Lol so much for "I GOTTA START USING DREAMWIDTH AGAIN", whoopsie-doodle. I've just been having fun in CBS Ghosts fandom. Wow, my last post about an episode was S2? Guys, the show is in S4 now and it is so unhinged.

Also, re: CBS Ghosts, if you enjoy Old Timey Pairings and are okay with your ship not being Opposites Attract, Nisaac (Isaac/Nigel) might be up your alley? One's a pompous Revolutionary War soldier who accidentally shot and killed his crush, an also-pompous British soldier. They have had their ups and downs. Both are into polite decorum yet are also both catty bitches. Isaac is cowardly and selfish but is trying to be less so. He's also very horny and very repressed. Nigel seems equally repressed and comes off as less horny, but in fact is a secret slut. It's interesting, it's definitely not the dynamic that seems to bring the m/m shippers out in droves (I'm a basic Bert/Ernie bitch myself), but I would be remiss if I didn't try to waft it in front of you guys and see if the scent provokes a ripple of interest.

(Isaac is in the icon, Nigel is not. The pantsless dude is Trevor.)

Also, if you are a lot like me and are like, "A sitcom that's popular with my coworkers who like Young Sheldon and Yellowstone? Gross!" I would say... don't be like me and give it a try because it's surprisingly dirty and the humor is broad but clever. We definitely have WWDITS-likers in our fandom, so it's not an either/or thing, taste-wise.

comments

I keep lamenting the death of feminist blogs but not really doing anything about it. I think people posting AND having discussions about what was posted is cool. Substacks have sort of replaced them, ish, but obviously that platform has huge, huge problems. They do have comment sections, but...

Is there a community here on DW where people discuss this stuff? Search didn't find me anything with actual posts in it. Should I bite the bullet and create a forum? If so, is there a free forum people like? That said, I am the laziest most inattentive mod ever and this is a topic that causes so many fights (see: why feminist bloggers eventually gave up, because the comment sections were vital, and also fucking exhausting, lol).

I'm just thinking about how the idea of enthusiastic consent came, iirc, from the blogosphere, obviously building on ideas formed from books (and probably consciousness raising circles?) from the second wave, and if we don't have people coming up with ideas and hashing them out, the future won't be as good.

That said, again. The modding. Yikes.

comments

So this young teen I know, a real sweetie, was getting bullied a bit online by her peers, peers who are antis or are turning into antis, and I got mad and leapt on Twitter and had a normal one, as you do. I'm middle aged and have attained zero wisdom. Zero percent.

Instead of working on becoming a better person, I started thinking: mid-2000s Harry Potter fandom on Livejournal was a Caligula-esque orgy of skullfucking, incest and beastiality. Meanwhile, here in 2023, the kid I mentioned above said one sentence -- "I headcanon that [Rarely Appearing Antagonist Guy] is a rapist," used Discord spoiler tags to censor the word "rapist" -- and that one sentence is what initially made her peers so mad.

How in the sweet frosty fuck did we get here?

I'm gonna try to untangle my thoughts. I'm worried I'm about to sound like some right-wing Substack concern troll scumbag, which is absolutely not what I want since I'm a liberal Democrat. I'm also worried these thoughts are so obvious that it's pointless to share them. But, I still want to try hashing it out, and I'd love your help hashing it out with me in the comments.

What I'm wondering is: did three good, important, vital, progressive ideas accidentally pave the way for all this?

( uh oh )

comments

Merry Xmas, happy holidays, happy very belated Chanukah, here's me copy and pasting something I wrote on Bluesky about episodic vs serialized tv:

This person wrote this (which, according to FFA, inspired a long thread by J. Michael Straczynski here):

https://twitter.com/JohnnySobczak/status/1737274115944288440

Sorry to act entitled over a non-serious issue, but it has to be said: being made to wait 2-3 years between seasons of television that are 8-10 episodes long is inexcusable and unsustainable. Just total corporate dissonance with regard to what people like about watching TV shows.

And that tweet and JMS' thread prompted this from me (cleaned up and edited):

Except here's the thing. At least in sff fandom nerd land, where I live, folks were creaming their jeans over serialization for the entire 90s & early '00s. Including me! DS9 was "better & more mature" because serialized. Same for B5. British shows were touted as better because they had fewer episodes -- quality over quantity. We heard this CONSTANTLY. This was the prevailing opinion. I don't remember a lot of discourse about filler episodes around this time (though I feel like I would hear anime fans talk about it?), but tv nerds like me were absolutely & understandably reacting to the pre-Buffy 1950s-80s model where characters simply did not remember what happened the episode before. Miles O'Brien gets brutally tortured? Next ep, he's fine. No emotional continuity, perpetual amnesia. It felt weird! That's not how humans work! It made sense for fans to want something else, for wanting the medium to evolve. And it did! Also, the purely episodic time gave us clip shows & that sucks*. On the plus side, it gave tv big writers rooms because 3 people can't possibly come up with 24 goddamn stories quickly, that's an insane amount of story.

BUT those insanely long episodic seasons, as folks like JMS have pointed out, let us get to know these characters for longer. (Also, less & shorter ad breaks gave us teasers & tags that were purely character-driven. I loved those.) But we can't pretend that the model we've had for the past decade isn't something we all LOUDLY CLAMORED FOR for the *previous* decade. Netflix gave us what we asked for, and gave it to us good and hard, and now we're realizing that, as usual in the US, we have swung wildly between extremes instead of just sensibly moderating. (The Buffy model is A+.)

*except for the Dinosuars clip shows. Those were very good.

comments

i earnestly love and admire that, in this particular political moment, Riverdale chose to bump up Kevin's screentime and focus on his new boyfriend, as well as continue to focus on Toni/Cheryl, and to show them kissing as much as possible. It's important and cool.

i know most people have probably abandoned this show (idky, it's always a batshit delight) but it's still cool that the writing team did this (maybe more cool)

did two characters living IN the 1950s just say, "you've really captured what it's like to be in a queer interracial relationship in the 1950s"? ...yes

did a young man in the 1950s just say the words "my mental health"? ...yes

which. lol. but, i mean, it's not a documentary, it's a show for teens in 2023, so fuck it

comments

I would love to see what vidders around my age and older think about the vidding style we're used to vs TikTok edits and the similarities and differences between those two lineages but since I was only ever adjacent to and not actually "in" that community (I make vids but never finish them lol), I don't know where to find those discussions, if they are occurring? Help?

ETA: Also, the youth have turned me onto Capcut (it's made by Bytedance, the company who makes TikTok, so if you're worried about that... welp), and dude.

1) it's free

2) it has all the functionality of Premiere and FCP (or at least all the functionality I was aware of and used?) only it's free. And hella easy to use if you're used to those. AND you can easily turn off the magnetic timeline. [ETA2: There's a version for mobile and for desktop. They're separate and don't sync with one another, which is a shame, but they're both great. Though desktop's version is better for higher-quality clip usage (since, how the hell are you important high-quality shit on mobile? It's all gonna be screen-recorded stuff from pirate sites. Can still look quite good, though!) and precision.]

In terms of clipping, I use Quicktime since Ventura doesn't let you use MPeg Streamclip anymore (which is a pity) and I remux with freeware called... Remux, which is useful for when QT decides to freak out about the file. Just remux it and that usually fixes the issue.

comments

Well, guys! I sure talked a big game when I moved to Mastodon (for the second time) during the (what turned out to be very brief) exodus from Twitter once Elon bought it. I was gonna use Dreamwidth more! I was gonna be on Mastodon all the time! Fuck Twitter!

1. This is icky to admit, but Elon (who is terrible and gross and has let fascist bigots back onto the platform) has made the For You tab, which I never used to look at, completely addictive (for me). It shows me everything I want to see (in a "ooh, look at this drama/outrage/discourse" way). I know. I know.

2. But honestly that's not most of the time. Most of the time, I'm on the 18+ CBS Ghosts Discord. "I LIKE SMALL FANDOMS," I lied to the world. "I'M GONNA MAKE FANDOM SMALL FOR MYSELF!" I mean, I do like small fandoms, once they hit a certain amount of activity, they're too overwhelming to me. But, like most every other person on in fandom, I like being where the action is, so... here I am, co-modding a Discord where we can all be horny away from the kids!

Come join us! If you want to! If you're into H-Money aka Tretty aka Trevor/Hetty, we've got a whole little area to hornily lose our minds in, it's a lot of fun. It would also be great to get people that ship other things in there (I know our Pete/Trevor and Isaac/Nigel and Trevor/Sam fans would love more folks to talk to). Or if you don't ship anything, that is also ok!

I think I would be on DW more if it was easier to post, with a WYSIWYG editor that allowed quick and easy italics and bolding and linking, on my phone. I mean, not that it's super hard, but if it was Tumblr-easy or Twitter-easy. Although that friction is probably part of what keeps Dreamwidth slower aka sane/less full of discourse? Idk. I mean, we sure had discourse in the late 2000s, lol.

Anyway. CBS Ghosts! It's a fun time! Ghosties reading this, what do you think of the recent episodes?

Also, I'm watching S3 of Picard but I'm not paying as much attention when I watch. I was kind of not into the plot points they were centering in the first three eps, but now they've added plot points that hook my interest more. Anybody else watching?

comments

I've been too exhausted to post about the show here, I mainly chat about it on the 18+ CBSG Discord server.
So I got into true crime, like a ghoul, and I watched The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker (2023). TW: Murder, sexual assault.

Also, I hate that, after the flush of <s>first</s> second romance with Mastodon, like so many other people, I was like:

In the beginning: This is great! No dumb discourse! It's so chill!

Now: What the fuck. Where's my hit of enraging discourse. It's so chill.

And here I am, knee-jerk posting my negative thoughts on Twitter and continuing to be part of the fucking problem. UGH!

( anyway, thoughts on this thing I probably shouldn't have watched and probably shouldn't be platforming under the cut, lolsob )

I don't know, am I wrong?
